“A cold poop -> didn’t poop at all. The MOON! Ah! A tenfold ring wraps the filtered light of the wane”
- as scribbled by Jacques in the race log

We just had a nice interlude with Tori, Hope, and Sarah , all of whom stopped by to warm up and eat a little lentil soup in the cabin. Tristan is now gone; upon his departure he took five trips to get all his stuff to his Prius. It now feels much more spacious to organize and consolidate food and supplies.
We at one point discussed the possibility of a game of wingspan, but now Claire is fast asleep. I wonder if Reid will play a two player game with me. Is that even possible? Reid seems to think that Claire will wake at some point, but seeing as she’s been up since 5 AM and was running on ~ 4.5 hours of sleep I feel doubtful that she will arise, unless prompted to do so.
I wish I were able to go night skate somewhere, this is the first day in the last week I haven’t gone out to the rink at the end of the day. The energy of the racers getting their second wind has me desiring movement as well, but running has never agreed with my body, even in 60° weather.
Jack seems to be doing OK, and has plenty of time to meet his abridged goal of 100 km and once again, I’m shocked that he was ever striving for 100 miles without having trained for this race at all.* We just learned that Sarah , the race organizer, ran a 40 mile race two weeks ago. It seems insanity is a common trait in this crowd.
Late in the evening, as the sun was setting, we heard a pair of trumpeter swans calling across the river. It seems as though everyone got to see them except for me; Claire and I were close to the river outlook when her ski boot broke and we had to turn back early.
Sorry that these updates have devolved into a stream of consciousness instead of concise updates about Jack’s wellbeing. In the words of Reid, “we’re all losing it here. Our mental states have devolved a questionable amount. The future is uncertain.”
I will once again note how concerning it is that I am feeling so exhausted, having slept a solid six hours, and not having run a single mile. Again, in the words of Reid, “I think what we’re doing is more exhausting.” I hope he’s being facetious.

*An editorial comment from Jacques: I have trained much for this race through having a huge training block of 3 one hundred mile weeks 6 weeks prior to this race. I think Iris is referring to a lack of specific training for this race outside of this baseline training that I am always doing. I did not however just drop this race having undergone no prep whatsoever.
Thanks, Iris. Ya done good.
